How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Write or paste your text

The count updates on every keystroke, with no reload.

  2. 2

    Compare networks

Each platform shows its limit and the characters remaining. You see at a glance where the text fits and where it needs cutting.

  3. 3

    Adjust before publishing

Rework the text until it fits your target networks, rather than discovering it truncated after posting.

Character limits: what actually matters

There are two limits to know for each network: the technical limit, beyond which the post is rejected, and the display limit, beyond which text is folded behind a "see more". The second matters most — it determines what your audience actually reads.

Instagram accepts 2,200 characters in a caption but shows only around 125 before folding. LinkedIn allows 3,000 and cuts around 140 to 210 depending on device. In other words, on both networks the essentials must fit in the first two lines.

This constraint isn't a punishment: it forces you to state your main idea up front. The posts that perform best are rarely the longest — they're the ones whose first line gives a reason to expand the rest.

Writing for the visible zone

  • Put your essential message in the first 125 characters on Instagram.
  • On LinkedIn, assume you have two lines before the "see more".
  • Count your emoji: most take two characters, some considerably more.
  • Links are auto-shortened on Twitter/X and count as a fixed length.
  • Hashtags count toward the total: on Instagram, 30 hashtags eat a real share of the caption.

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits per network?

Roughly: Twitter/X 280 characters (free account), Instagram 2,200 for captions, LinkedIn 3,000, TikTok 2,200, YouTube 100 for the title and 5,000 for the description, Pinterest 500 for descriptions.

Do emoji count as one character?

Rarely. Most take two units, and composed emoji — skin tone or gender combinations — can take considerably more.

How many hashtags on Instagram?

Thirty maximum per post. In practice, three to five precise hashtags usually outperform an exhaustive list.

What happens if I go over the limit?

Depending on the network, the post is rejected or the text is truncated on display. Either way, better to know before hitting publish.
