Choosing an Instagram handle that lasts
The handle is the hardest thing to change once a community is established. It appears in your profile URL, in every mention, in screenshots shared by your followers. Changing it breaks existing links and creates confusion, even though Instagram permits it.
A good handle is short, easy to say out loud and consistent across networks. Ideally you reserve the same name everywhere, including on platforms you don't use yet: it's free, and it stops someone else taking it the day you need it.
Watch out for periods and underscores: they make a handle hard to dictate and easy to forget. An account called "my.great_brand" will be misspelled in mentions all the time — and a failed mention earns you nothing.
Picking the right username

- Avoid filler numbers: a handle ending in "01" signals a fallback account.
- Stay under 15 characters so the name displays in full everywhere.
- Check that no registered trademark matches the name you're targeting.
- A handle can look free while simply being disabled: a suspended account keeps its name for a while.

Is a handle shown as available really available?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. There are exceptions: names reserved by Instagram, suspended accounts whose handle stays locked, or protected trademarks. The only definitive confirmation is actually creating the account.
Can I change my handle later?
Yes, from your settings. But the old name is released and can be claimed by anyone, including to impersonate you. A change needs planning.
